Cliffside: The Beautiful Walk from Puerto Rico To Amadores Beach

The clifftop path between Puerto Rico resort and Amadores beach is one of the easiest and most beautiful in south Gran Canaria. Here's where to start and a few tips for along the way.

Start walking at Puerto Escala in Puerto Rico

Walking to AmadoresStart the walk from Puerto Rico at Puerto Escala, the western marina of the two in Puerto Rico (closest to Amadores). The path starts at the beginning of the harbour wall next to the bars on Calle Doreste y Molina. Just walk up the steps next to the dive centre and you get to the beginning of the path next to the Puerto Rico Beach Club.

The walk is one kilometre long and is mostly flat apart from the final hill down to Amadores beach right at the end. You can't get lost as you just follow the path.

Look out for big lizards on the rocks as you walk along and also see if you can spot the divers in the azure water; this bit of coast is a popular spot for local dive schools. You'll also see the local ferries that connect Puerto Rico resort to Puerto de Mogan, Anfi and Arguineguín marinas.

Stop for a drink along the way to Amadores (or on the way back)

Amadores walk barAbout 250 metres along the path you come to the guest exit for the Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso & Hotel with its convenient bar. It's open to the public so you can stop for a cool, sharp half or a refreshing Cubata.

Then its back on the path towards Amadores past palm trees and bougainvillaea bushes. look west and you'll see Teide volcano in Tenerife on the horizon.

Around the corner and Amadores appears

arriving at Amadores beachYou can't see Amadores beach until you turn the last corner of the path but when you do the whole walk is worth the effort. You see the whole beach with its fringe of palm trees and bright, white sand.

All that's left is a stroll down the hill and you can pick your spot. The watersports are at the end of the breakwater at the near end of the beach while the big floating playground (kids love it but parents be warned; it's exhausting) is at the far end of the beach by the Amadores Beach Club.

To get back to Puerto Rico, either walk back along the same path (don't forget that bar) or hop in a taxi (parked by the middle of the beach). Or you can hop on any of the blue buses that stop just inland from the roundabout behind the centre of the beach.
